Sunlight makes your life better in many ways. It gives you warmth, helps you see things around and provides you with loads and loads of vitamin D to make your bones strong. But sunlight is not just for light and vitamin D, there is a whole deal of good that sunlight can do to you (and probably you never knew about it!). Here are some good things about sunlight you ought to know.

Prevents Cancer

It helps prevent cancer: Vitamin D from sunrays not just protects your bones but can also help prevent various kinds of cancers too. A study published in European Journal of Cancer Prevention mentions that high level of vitamin D help to reduce risk of colorectal cancer. Pain Relief

It is a natural pain reliever: A study done by a close group of surgeons from University of Pittsburgh found that people undergoing cervical and lumbar spinal surgery when exposed to the sun faced faster recovery than those who didn’t get much of sunlight post the surgery. The study was then published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine.

Overall Health

It boosts overall health: A study published in International Journal of Epidemiology found that high vitamin D levels reduce the risk of active TB. Another study published in Journal of Clinical Investigation pointed out that exposure to sunlight prevented rickets. Prevents Depression

It prevents depression: For people suffering from seasonal affective disorder or SAD, where serotonin levels are down, exposure to sunlight can make a difference. A study published in Environmental Health showed that seasonal depression and cognitive functions did improve when patients were exposed to sunlight. This is one reason why SAD is common in higher altitudes due to less exposure to sunlight.

Improve Bone Health

It is good for bone health: We kept the obvious fact for the last. Yes, vitamin D from the sun helps to develop stronger bones and prevents conditions like osteoporosis, fractures and bone density loss.

How Much Is Too Much

How much is too much: While there are various benefits of sun exposure, remember there is a down side to it. Too much of ultraviolet rays can lead to skin cancer and burns. So be cautious. Stay away from the sun during the mid-day heat that is from 11 am to 3pm. Lather sunscreen that has SPF +15 factor or more.
