Omega-3 Fatty Acids Improves Attention In Adolescents
Are your children getting enough omega-3 fatty acids from the food they eat? A new study has underscored the importance of having a diet rich in omega 3, in particular docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), for a healthy brain development in in adolescents.
The study co-led by Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) found higher intake of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in adolescents associated with increased attention performance. On the other hand, adolescents with higher levels of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) experienced lower impulsivity, the finding the scientists believe may be clinically relevant as impulsivity is linked to several psychiatric conditions, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
The authors concluded that their findings add to the growing evidence on the benefits of consuming Omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids, especially DHA, for proper brain development and function.
