Dead Butt Syndrome

Our hips are a combination of fat and muscles. The gluteal muscles that form the hips are among the largest in the body and maintain body stability, movement and posture. While most of us never consider their function beyond seating us on surfaces, they can affect your back and leg health. Today’s sedentary lifestyle and our sitting on our glutes for hours in order are causing a certain condition called the dead butt syndrome.

Glutes Becoming Weak Over Time

Gluteal muscles are known to stabilize the pelvis. If they get weakened or injured, it can lead to lower back pain, and knee and ankle problems. As per some experts, one when is in a seating position for a long time, other muscles called hip flexors contract while the glutes relax. If we keep the position persistent for a long time, we are training the glutes to become weak.

Runners At Higher Risk

People who run a lot are at a higher risk of developing the condition if they spend too much of their non-running time at the desk. The reason might be that such people (athletes and even dancers) are either running or doing an activity for longer periods and then sitting for longer periods. Hence, their muscles remain in similar positions for extended periods. Also Read - Guava juice and iron absorption: Scientists explore a surprisingly powerful combination

Intermittent Movement Is The Way Out

The best way to avoid suffering from dead butt syndrome is to make space for periodic movement between long sitting sessions. One can engage in activities like taking a small walk or climbing stairs. One can also do cold compression or engage in exercises that might elevate your legs and give some activity to your buttock muscles like squatting.
