Menstrual disorders

Periods are not always easy. Each of us might experience our menstrual cycles differently. With sedentary lifestyle and increasing stress, menstrual disorders have become far more common than before. While many of us are aware of the pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) that affects many of us and causes physical and emotional discomfort during our cycle, there are other menstrual problems also that we must talk about.

Dysmenorrhea

This condition is characterized by severe and frequent menstrual cramps and pain during your periods. The areas affected by the cramps and pain are lower abdomen and lower back. The condition is accompanied by symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, and headaches. The condition can be primary, existing from the beginning of periods or could be secondary due to some underlying conditions.

Menorrhagia

This is also a common menstrual problem where a woman might be bleeding more than normal. Women affected by this condition have periods over the usual course of seven days. Causes of the condition could be hormonal imbalances, changes in diet, metabolic problems, vaginal infections and even puberty. If a woman has to change her menstrual product after every two hours due to heavy bleeding, then also it might fall as symptom of this condition. Both length of menstrual cycle and quantity of blood lost characterizes the condition.

Metrorrhagia

This is characterized by irregular bleeding between the menstrual cycles. Women affected by this condition might bleed more than 80 ml during a menstrual cycle. The bleeding is also unexpected and frequent. Sometimes a condition called Menometrorrhagia might occur which is a combination of both heavy bleeding and bleeding at irregular intervals. Causes could be hormonal imbalances, lack of ovulation, blood clotting disorders and others.

Amenorrhea

Absence of menstrual cycle during the reproductive years characterizes this condition. It must not be confused with pregnancy where your cycles might terminate during the gestational period. One missed cycle is usually not a cause of worry but if the woman misses her cycle for months, she might be suffering from the condition. It however doesn’t mean that the woman is infertile. Sometimes the causes could be structural difficulties related with genitals or conditions like androgen insensitivity syndrome and others. Secondary causes could be some underlying gynecological or other illness, very low BMI and others.
