When a person is diagnosed with any form of cancer, they repeatedly hear their doctor use a specific terminology while treating them. A patient diagnosed with breast cancer is likely to hear these words almost regularly during the course of their treatment. It, therefore, becomes important to know what these medical jargons are, and their meanings. Scroll down to find out.
Benign means non-cancerous tumours or growths that do not invade the surrounding tissues or spread to other parts of the body.
Malignant is the opposite of benign. It means cancerous cells that invade and destroy surrounding tissues and can spread to other parts of the body.
Biopsy is the process of removal and examination of tissue or cells from a 'suspected' cancerous area to confirm or rule out cancer.
Stage is the classification of the cancer's extent and spread, ranging from stage 0 (non-invasive) to stage 4, which is advanced metastatic cancer.
Metastasis is the spread of cancer cells from the original site (breast) to other parts of the body, such as lymph nodes, bones, or organs.
It is the surgical removal of one or both breasts, partially or entirely, often as a preventive measure or to treat cancer that has advanced.
Lumpectomy is the surgical removal of a cancerous tumour and surrounding tissue, while preserving the rest of the breast.
