Four For Women

As per the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, binge drinking is a pattern of drinking that brings blood alcohol concentration to 0.08 g/dL or higher. For an adult female, binge drinking starts at four drinks and for men, it is five drinks. This is the point beyond which the health risk starts to rise.

Women Outpacing Men

Upcoming studies are showing that alcohol consumption, particularly binge drinking is rising among women. As per a new report in the US, it is the first time in history that women have outpaced men in their drinking behaviour. 11.8 per cent of female students reported binge drinking as compared to 10.4 per cent of males who reported the same in the month the observation was made. Also Read - Mental Health of Healthcare Workers: 'We Are Victims of Sleepless Nights, and Constant Anxiety Issues'

More Detrimental To Women

Studies have shown that women tend to have alcohol-related problems sooner and at lower drinking levels. One reason being alcohol predominantly resides in water and women have less water in their bodies as compared to men. It means that if a man and a woman drink the same amount of alcohol, the concentration of the spirit in their blood would be greater as compared to men.

Social And Physical Risks

Binge drinking in women increases the risk of accidental pregnancies, susceptibility to assaults, and serious injuries from falls and vehicular accidents. It is also associated with an elevated risk of developing breast cancer.
