Wrong Skincare Products For Dry Skin

Using the wrong skincare products: You may follow a stringent beauty regimen but if the products you use are not right, your skin will only get drier. People with dry skin should avoid using toners and astringents as they are alcohol-based and further dry out the skin. Also, use a gentle cleanser, preferably a gel-based, soap-free formula to take off dirt but not the skin’s natural oils.

Hot Showers And Dry Skin

Taking hot showers: Hot showers feel blissful especially in the winter months but you will feel your skin getting dry and tight post your bath. This is because the water in your skin evaporates which leaves it feeling dehydrated. To avoid this, make sure the water is lukewarm. If you really can’t do without hot showers, keep it to not more than five minutes and moisturise your skin immediately.  Also Read - More than cosmetic: How reconstructive surgery helps trauma and cancer survivors rebuild their lives

Shaving And Dry Skin

Shaving to get rid of unwanted hair: When you use a razor on your skin, you are shaving more than just your hair. It also removes your skin’s natural moisturising layer. This irritates the skin later. Make sure you shave in the shower as the hair is soft that time. Also use a shaving gel and a sharp razor as old, blunt blades can cause more damage. Moisturise skin post shaving.

Acidic Ingredients And Dry Skin

Applying acidic ingredients on skin: Many people resort to home remedies thinking they are safer with no side-effects. While this holds true, choosing the right ingredient is also vital. People who have dry skin should stay away from citrus fruits, anything acidic and too coarse in nature such as oats, sugar, etc. Use gentle ingredients to make packs such as banana, honey, olive oil, aloe vera gel.  Also Read - Irregular periods could signal PMOS: NHS warns women not to ignore early symptoms

Water And Dry Skin

Not drinking enough water: Water is what keeps your skin hydrated. Our body is made up of 70% of water and by not drinking enough, you are depriving your skin its natural nutrient. Water also helps flush out toxins and replenish your skin so make sure you sip enough of this liquid from time to time.

Not Moisturising Dry Skin

Not moisturising enough: Dry skin needs extra TLC as it is more prone to losing moisture from the surface. When you use a moisturiser, you seal it from evaporating and also refuel the lost one. The best time to do so is just after your bath. Pat your skin dry and then apply a moisturiser. When the skin is damp, it absorbs it easily and locks it in.  Also Read - Can adults refuse to grow up? Scratching Itchy, Dry Skin

Scratching itchy skin: Dry skin is bound to get itchy mostly when it is not moisturised. You are damaging it more by scratching it when it gets itchy. This will make it red and flaky. Apply a thick layer of moisturiser such as a shea butter or cocoa butter one to avoid itchiness. Do not use your nails to scratch the itch, gently soothe the skin with your fingers. If your skin is itchy all the time, visit a dermatologist as you may be suffering from a skin condition.
