Dermatologist Dr Jaishree Sharad gives out easy ways to take care of your ears in case of a gun-shot piercing. Here is how you should go about it:
Clean and sterilise old earrings before use - To avoid chances of infections, clean your old earrings thoroughly. Dr Jaishree advises, 'To clean, use hot soap water and to sterilize (silver or gold) soak them in boiling water for 20 minutes.'
Wear gold earrings in newly pierced ears - A metal likely to cause less skin irritation is gold. She suggests wearing earrings in gold, with lesser quantity of nickel mixed in it.
Apply turmeric paste on the wound – Our expert asserts, 'A paste of turmeric and water would help as turmeric is antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Avoid using a salt water solution as it could aggravate skin irritation.'
Avoid swimming – The chlorine and bacteria in swimming pool water could irritate your piercings. As per our expert, it's best to stay away from chlorinated water until the pain and swelling subside.
Consult a doctor for sensitive skin - 'I would not suggest a home remedy for sensitive skin. It is best to consult a dermatologist and use a cortisone and mupirocin ointment combination,' recommends Dr Jaishree.
Remove earrings during bed time - For comfort during sleeping hours Dr Jaishree advises removing the earrings and applying mupirocin ointment before sleeping.
Let the ear hole shut in case of excessive skin irritation - She recommends you allow the hole to close if there is persistent infection or painful lumps or keloids. 'You could try wearing garlic or neem sticks to heal the area,' she says.
