A bowlful of oatmeal at breakfast can help aid weight loss, improve digestion and increase your fibre intake. While this wonder cereal favours your gut, it can also help you take good care of your skin and hair when used as a beauty ingredient. Yes, it is true; your favourite breakfast cereal can replace your expensive facial scrub or work as a natural shampoo. Wondering how? Here is how it works.
Facial and body scrub: Due to its rough texture oatmeal can double up as a facial scrub and is gentle on skin when used in combination with other ingredients. To make the scrub, take a handful of the cereal and add one spoonful of honey along with few drops of an essential oil of your choice. Rub this scrub on your face and body to extract all the dirt, grime and excess oil naturally, without any chemical interventions. Wash it off with water to get a healthy glow on your skin.
Natural cleanser: Mix oatmeal in a bowl of water and wash your face with the mixture which creates lather like foaming face washes. Thanks to the saponins present in oatmeal and its high lipid content that help lock moisture in the skin; the protein in the cereal restores skin’s barrier function while removing all the dirt from face.
Facial mask: Because of its moisturising properties, oatmeal can also work as an effective face pack or mask to rejuvenate your dull skin. You can use oats in combination with honey and rose water or milk and lemon juice to make a homemade face pack. Apply the pack all over the face and leave it for 10 minutes. Wash off with cold water for healthy glowing skin.
Treats itchy skin: Application of oatmeal on the face can help neutralise the pH balance of the skin and hence fight various skin problems like itchy skin or redness that happens when your skin turns dry due to external irritants or other environmental factors.
Treats acne: Oatmeal is rich in antioxidants along with anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. This makes it a chosen kitchen ingredient for acne treatment. Mix some oats in water and make a thick mix out of it. Apply it on the acne prone area and allow it to dry for some time. Next, wash it off with water and repeat this every alternate day.
Dry shampoo: Have a bad hair day and no time to take a head bath? Use oatmeal to revive your hair. Take handful of oats and grind it in a mixer to make a powder. Apply this powder all over your hair and brush it off with a boar bristle brush. It would soak all the oil from the hair and help you get a natural sheen without a wash!
