Several reports have highlighted that the number of people dealing with anxiety and depression has significantly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. A study by scientists at the University of Reading has suggested that Vitamin B6 supplements could be effective in preventing or treating mood disorders. In the study, young adults reported feeling less anxious and depressed after taking high doses of Vitamin B6 tablets for a month. Vitamins B6 is known to provide a calming effect on the brain by increasing the production of GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid), a chemical that inhibits impulses in the brain. The experts believe that this calming effect helped reduced anxiety among the participants. They reported the findings in the journal Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental.

The researchers noted that this research is at an early stage and the effect of Vitamin B6 on anxiety, they observed, was quite small. It is advisable to consult a doctor before taking any supplements as getting too much can sometimes cause negative side effects.

Vitamin B6 Deficiency

Studies have linked low blood levels of vitamin B6 to increased risk of heart disease. Vitamin B6 deficiency may also lead to weak immune system, dermatitis with cheilosis (cracked or sore lips), glossitis (swollen tongue), depression and confusion.
