Liver failure symptoms

Your liver has over 500 important functions including detoxification, producing bile, storing nutrients and regulating metabolism. The issue is that liver disease can progress quietly but when symptoms do occur it could mean the organ has been significantly damaged. The American Liver Foundation (ALF) and research published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology state that early detection of signs and symptoms can offer benefits for treatment and avoid permanent liver damage. Check out these eight early signs of liver disease you should not ignore:

Dark urine and paler stool

Dark urine and clay or pale stools may indicate that bile is not flowing properly due to liver or bile duct problems. These alterations should not be overlooked particularly when accompanied by jaundice.

Confusion or memory problems

Hepatic encephalopathy is a buildup of toxins in the brain due to poor liver function. This sign can cause difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness or personality changes which are all emergency medical conditions.

Persistent itching

Itching without a rash may be caused by the buildup of bile salts under the skin. This symptom is frequently seen with chronic liver diseases.

Loss of appetite

When the liver struggles to function normally such as processing fats and regulating metabolism efficiently, it can lead to decreased appetite, nausea and unintentional weight loss.

Easy bruising or bleeding

The liver produces proteins that help blood clot which is why with organ dysfunction, cuts and bruises take longer to stop bleeding while bruising occurs very often.

Persistent fatigue

If you are very tired even after you've had a full night's sleep then it's a potential sign of liver dysfunction. Your energy levels could plummet as your liver works harder to get rid of toxins and digest nutrients.

Swelling in the abdomen or legs

A damaged liver can lead to decreased production of proteins such as albumin. This can result in fluid accumulating in the abdomen or legs causing high pressure in the liver blood vessels.

Yellowing of the skin and eyes

Poor liver function can also cause jaundice due to the excess of bilirubin in the blood. It is one of the most easily recognizable symptoms of liver disease and is a medical emergency.
