How To Help Someone Dealing With Cancer

When a person gets diagnosed with cancer, they may feel shocked initially, and later, when the realisation sets in, they are likely to feel anxious, sad, and even depressed. Cancer diagnosis can be heartbreaking and life-changing. The patient -- while undergoing physical health issues -- may need the support of a community, including friends and family to help them come out of a negative state of mind. These seven things will allow you to help such a person emotionally as well as mentally.

Emotional Support

It is important to provide emotional support to the cancer patient during this phase. Listen to- and validate their feelings. Do not try to offer solutions, but just be present and mindful.

Physical Support

It is possible for the cancer patient to want help with practical tasks like banking services, shopping for groceries, cooking and cleaning, driving around, etc. Help them as much as possible.

Respect Their Boundaries

Respect their need for spending time alone, or wanting some space. They may not want to talk to people all the time, or even answer the phone. As such, it would be a good idea to not talk to them much, or share more than what they are comfortable with, especially if they have communicated it.

Create A Safe Space

Be their safe space by encouraging open communication with them so that they can talk about their feelings, fears, and concerns. Be there for them when they feel overwhelmed.

Provide Them With A Positive Environment

It is important to surround the cancer patient with positivity. Celebrate little milestones, small wins, and make them feel better, even if it is for a day. Help them engage in activities that they enjoy.

Self-care

It is important for the patient to continue to do self-care activities that allow them some 'me-time'. They must be able to promote their own emotional well-being.

Seek Professional Help

Consider taking them to a counselor or a cancer support group when things get overwhelming for them. This will ensure they are in a healthy state of mind, in control of their emotions.
