Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. Studies have shown that incidence and mortality rates of breast cancer are rising particularly in developing countries where the majority of cases are diagnosed in late stages. This type of cancer occurs when some breast cells begin to grow abnormally, forming a lump or mass. Usually it begins in the milk-producing ducts (invasive ductal carcinoma), but it may also begin in the glandular tissue called lobules (invasive lobular carcinoma) or in other cells or tissue within the breast. Although breast cancer can occur in both men and women, it's more common in women. While the exact cause of breast cancer remains unclear, genetic mutations, lifestyle and environmental factors may play a role in increasing your risk of breast cancer. According to researchers, about 5 to 10 percent of breast cancers are caused due to gene mutations passed through generations of a family. Lifestyle factors like heavy drinking, smoking, estrogen exposure, and certain dietary patterns have been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. Here are a list of foods and beverages that researchers say may increase your risk of breast cancer:

Alcohol: Alcohol use, especially heavy drinking, may increase levels of estrogen and other hormones associated with hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer. Alcohol also may damage DNA in cells and thus increase breast cancer risk.
