Summer skincare

We are all familiar with the feeling of a warm and glowing tan after a day in the sun but did you know that this can quickly change to painful redness, itching and skin irritation? Sunburn is not only uncomfortable but also indicates skin damage caused by too much sun exposure. Although experts note that it's best to prevent sunburn having knowledge on how to reduce discomfort and promote healing is crucial at the same time. Here are five easy but effective treatments for sunburn after a sunny day:

Cold compress

The initial treatment for sunburn is to cool your skin. This can be done either by taking a shower or applying a cold compress to the skin. It will reduce inflammation and give immediate relief from the burn. However ensure to avoid using ice as this can make it worse.

Aloe vera gel

Aloe vera is a popular ingredient because of its calming effects which can cool inflamed skin. You can either use the natural gel from the plant or products made with aloe. Other soothing ingredients such as chamomile or cucumber extract can also soothe and relieve irritation.

Drinking water

Sunburn causes fluid to move to the surface of the skin causing the rest of your body to be dehydrated. You should ensure to rehydrate by drinking water and apply a gentle, unscented moisturizer to seal in moisture. Several experts suggest using aloe vera and hyaluronic acid as they can offer relief and promote skin repair.

Avoid harsh skincare products

If your skin barrier is damaged "active" ingredients can irritate the skin. Therefore avoid using retinoids, exfoliating acids and strongly scented products until your skin has recovered. Instead keep it simple with a mild cleanser, calming moisturiser and sunscreen if you need to go out again.

Let your skin rest

Skin damage takes time to heal so always wear loose clothes and do not expose your skin to sunlight. If you must be outdoors then wear sunscreen and cover up outfits to prevent direct sun exposure. Finally rest, drink plenty of fluids and eat a healthy diet to aid the repair process. This content is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
