Monsoon illnesses that can affect your health and well-being

The monsoon season, with rains and humidity, can bring about many seasonal illnesses from which you will need to protect yourself. Monsoon season is mostly associated with mosquito-borne diseases, but digestive issues are also quite common during this time of the year. As such, you need to be extremely mindful of your overall lifestyle and diet. Read on to know about what doctors want you to know.

Malaria

This is a mosquito-borne infection that is characterised by high fever, chills, weakness, and body aches. It can be prevented with the use of mosquito repellents and mosquito nets. You must also remove stagnant water from your surroundings.

Dengue

This infection spreads by Aedes mosquitoes. Its symptoms are severe, which include high fever, extreme headaches, joint and muscle pain accompanied by rashes on the skin. To prevent it, eliminate the breeding of mosquitoes from your vicinity, and protect your body by using repellents and nets.

Chikungunya

This is another severe mosquito-borne viral infection, whose symptoms include pain and swelling in the joints, and high fever. Protect yourself by using mosquito repellents, wearing full-sleeved clothes at home and when stepping outside, and preventing the breeding of mosquitoes.

Diarrhea

Monsoon season can cause digestive concerns, and among them is diarrhea, a waterborne disease caused by bacterial contamination. It can cause loose motions, fever, shivering, vomiting, and weakness. In the rainy season, drink boiled or filtered water to prevent it, and avoid eating roadside food. Also be mindful about your personal hygiene.

Typhoid

This is a bacterial infection that is caused by contaminated food and water, doctors warn. Its symptoms include nagging headache, fever, abdominal pain. To prevent it, eat home-cooked meals that are freshly-cooked. Wash fruits thoroughly before consumption.
