Place The Tulsi Plant In A Sunny Spot

Sunlight plays a very significant part in the Tulsi plant particularly during winter. In colder seasons, it is important to keep the pot in an area where it gets at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight on the first or second day. The ideal one is a balcony or a terrace or a window sill exposed to morning sunlight. In case of a very cold weather you may take the plant inside and place it close to a sunny window, so that it may not be frozen.

Reduce Watering During Winter

In winter, tulsi does not require a lot of water. One of the most prevalent reasons for the death of Tulsi plants in cold months is overwatering. Never water without having to check the soil. In case the surface layer of soil appears to be dry, sprinkle the water. It is best not to water every day because cold and wet soil can cause root rot. Ensure that the pot has good drains to help the additional water to get out easily.  Also Read - Tulsi for Stress Relief: How To Use Holy Basil To Lower Cortisol Levels, And Beat Anxiety Naturally

Protect The Plant From Cold Winds

Tulsi is cold sensitive, e.g., its leaves may be damaged, and growth slows down due to cold winds and frost. In case your Tulsi is kept outside, it is to be covered with a light cotton cloth or garden cover in case of very cold nights. During the daytime you can take off the cover in order to give the plant sufficient air and sunlight. This bare-boned measure aims at conserving heat about the plant.

Use Organic Fertiliser Sparingly

In winter, tulsi is slow-growing, and thus, it does not need intensive feeding. Excess fertiliser is detrimental to the plant. Place a few inches of light organic compost, cow dung manure or vermicompost every month to give nutrients. The use of chemical fertilisers should be avoided because it may stress the plant even in the colder season. The plant does not need a large dose of natural fertiliser.  Also Read - 7 Curative Properties Of Tulsi: Reasons Why You Need To Keep This Plant In Your House

Prune Dry And Yellow Leaves

In winter, winter may lead to the yellowing of some Tulsi leaves or drying out. There are leaves which one should regularly remove with the help of clean scissors or by gingerly pinching them off. Light pruning assists the plant in saving on energy and also allows the plant to grow in a healthy manner once the weather is good. Plants should not be over-pruned during winter; just prune away the dead and damaged.
