A child's diet dramatically affects long-term heart health. High-fat (incredibly saturated and trans fat) and sugary diets can harm blood vessel function, raising the risk of heart disease and obesity as early as adolescence.
Limit saturated fat in your child's diet. Some primary sources of saturated fat include butter, cheeses, whole milk, ice cream, pizza, and grain—and dairy-based desserts. Trans fats include pastries, pies, doughnuts, cookies, and deep-fried foods.
Suggestions for heart-healthy habits include good health and fitness, drinking several glasses of water, avoiding sugary beverages, and consuming less than 2,000 milligrams of salt daily.
Choose low-fat meats, like chicken and fish. Use fruits instead of high-fat desserts, like ice cream, cake, and cookies. Limit the amount of added fat, like butter, oil, salad dressing, and mayonnaise.
