Breast pump, whether manual or electric, is a life saver for any breastfeeding mom, but especially for a working one. When I became a mother and decided to pump and store milk for my baby, I was confused. I had to choose between an electric pump or a manual one, and then also select from the many brands available. The most logical step was to consult the experts -- moms who have used different breast pumps. So I spoke to a couple of moms and this is what they had to say-
Manual breast pumps vs electric breast pumps
Simran Sawant, a media professional said, "I have used both, manual and electric breast pump and let me tell you one thing about the manual one, it is too much time and effort! It feels like draining an ocean drop by drop. I hated using the manual one. The electric one was painful for me too. Guess I never figured how to operate it properly. Both my breast pumps were from the Pigeon brand.'
Some moms complained of breast pumps being hurtful or leaving the nipples sore and in pain. However, Razia Khanom, a professional baker, explains why they might have hated the breast pump. 'I have used my Medela electric breast pump with both my kids for over four years and have never once had a problem. With an electric pump, the trick is to start using it on a lower suction power. Most women commit the mistake of going full throttle. Start with a softer suction and build it from there. Once you get the setting right, electric breast pumps are the easiest to use,' she feels. Did you know that you increase milk supply by expressing milk?
Another working mom, Devyani Arora, says, 'I have used both, manual and electric breast pump and would recommend an electric one any day for the convenience. A manual one is very tough to use. I had to pump to avoid breast engorgement while I was away at work. I would simply start using my electric breast pump and keep doing whatever I was doing even at work."
Speaking to these moms, it was clear that an electric breast pump is the clear winner. However, before making up my mind, I spoke to Sonali Shivlani, pregnancy and lactation expert. In her opinion, what kind of breast pump you opt for depends on how much you plan to use it. 'If your child is 6 months and you wish to join work, even a basic breast pump will serve your purpose. However, a working mom of 3-month-old twins will need a heavy duty one. It is also safe to use breast pumps, contrary to what many women think, it doesn't cause sagging breasts,' she said.
