Will squatting stunt my child’s growth? (Query)

I have a 12-year old son who is into playing badminton and squash. His coach makes him perform squats on a regular basis. I am afraid that performing squats will stunt my child s growth. Is it true that squats can stunt growth? Also Read - Ace it like Dhoni: Best exercises for a budding cricketer

That squatting stunts a child s growth is a common notion. But if your 12-year old wants to perform squats, do not stop him as squatting will not stunt his growth. In fact, it will, in fact, help him build healthy muscles and bones and make him less likely to get injured if he is into sports. Bodyweight exercises like squats can be ideal for kids as they won t strain your child s muscles. It can also help prevent obesity in kids.

Benefits

Squats is a basic bodyweight exercise that will help build strength in your child s quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings and calf muscles. It will also support the ankles and knees while strengthening the tendons and ligaments. Plus, squatting can help alleviate all the stress in the shoulders and back caused by carrying bags and heavy backpacks.

However, it is important that they perform the exercise correctly. Here are some tips:

  • Ensure that he places his feet hip-width apart and his hands on the hips. He should keep his back straight.
  • Also, ensure that your child does not bend the knees past the toes while squatting.
  • He should slowly sink bending at hips and knees and gently rise back to the standing position to avoid any injury.

Encourage your child to perform squats. You will notice a positive change in his posture, height, stature, and overall demeanour. Your kids will also love these yoga poses.
