When I tried experimenting with food for my toddler after she moved ahead of the weaning phase, oats became her all-time favourite. I was glad, since oats come packed with fibre and other vital nutrients that can keep her full and healthy. While oats and milk seems an easy, quick and nutritious recipe for your child, I preferred the vegetable porridge that could replace the rice khichdi at times. Here is an excellent weaning recipe Apple badam kheer.

Ingredients

  • Half cup of oats
  • One cup boiled vegetables potatoes, carrots, green peas, beetroot
  • Half sliced tomatoes
  • One spoon Badam (Almond) powder
  • Salt to taste

Method

  • In a pressure cooker boil all the vegetables till one whistle as this helps to retain the texture. Don t overdo this else you will end up with mashed vegetables.
  • In a pan or kadhai boil oats for few minutes and then add all the vegetables.
  • Stir them well and then add one scoop of badam powder, turmeric powder and salt.
  • If you wish, you can add a scoop of ghee to this.
  • When the porridge turns to be thick and consistent, remove it from the flame and allow it to cool for a while.
  • Serve when cool.

Tip: you can also replace the oats with daliya to make it more wholesome. This recipe can double up as a snack or main meal for children between 14 to 24 months of age.
