Tried and tested activities to help toddlers learn the alphabets

These activities will help your toddlers memorise the alphabets.

Teaching your toddler alphabets is very important. That is the base of everything that your child will learn later on in life. With toddlers, you can t simply sit down and teach them the alphabets. You have to incorporate the learning in their everyday life and the games they play so that they can get familiar with the letters and start recognising them. Here are some fun ways that helped me teach my toddler the alphabets.

  • Flashcards: Of course, the stepping stones for learning anything. I love using flash cards because I can carry it anywhere and since one card has only on letter on it, my toddler doesn t get confused and all her focus is on memorising that one letter. I use flashcards that are not too busy or colourful, so that all the attention is on the letter itself. You can get flashcards on alphabets just about in any kids or stationary store, or even online.
  • Magnet letters: This was my daughter s favourite activity. Get the magnet letters that are easily available in any toy store or online stores, and let your child stick it on the fridge, while repeating what the letters are and which item in the kitchen starts with that particular letter. My daughter oved sticking the letters and then trying to match it with an object that starts with that particular letter.
  • Chalkboard: There is something about chalkboards that makes the children want to study, It simply commands a classroom like atmosphere. I stuck huge chalkboard stickers on my walls. Covering about half the wall s length and I ask her to be the teacher and teach the alphabets to her (imaginary) students. She of corse, happily obliges and learns a few letters in exchange.
  • Matching flashcards with objects: Lot of people pay more attention to the phonics than learning the letters. If you are one of them, they you can give the flashcards to your child and ask her to place it on objects that are spelled starting with that particular letter. For example: Putting F flash card near the fan. T flashcard near the TV. This will encourage your child to start reading and learn the alphabets too.
  • Join the dots: Doing activities that involved writing or making something made my child feel accomplished. What I used to do is get her the wipe-and-clean activity books on learning these alphabets and she would spend a lot of time, writing on the join the dots and understanding the shape of each letter.
  • Read just about everything: Story books are more of an entertainment factor for them, and they don t really pay attention to the letters and spellings. Choose an alphabet and try finding it in different places like the newspaper, hoardings, pamphlets or anywhere where there are spellings.
