As a parent, among all the life altering decisions that you have to make, how to store toys will take up the most of your mental bandwidth and test your patience like nothing else. If you are a parent reading this, you know that nothing makes you see red as much as when you 'accidentally' step on an especially poky piece of Lego. We have all had to wade through a room strewn with toys as if we were walking on landmines, because truth be told, no matter how much you clean, organise and put away the toys, they'll always find their way out and be spread all over your house. So how do you deal with toy invasion and save on the precious floor space? By using these tips!

  1. Bring out toys in rotation: No matter how many toys your child has, at any given time, there will be only a handful toys she actually plays with. I figured this after my daughter's first birthday. She had received a truckload of toys, but she played with only a few. So I stashed away the other toys and brought them out one at a time every few weeks. This way she was actually interested in the new toys and I did not have to deal with the toy avalanche all at once.
  2. Get stackable bins: These are a lifesaver. I got huge bins or boxes that can be stacked on top of each other. So after I am done sorting the blocks from the puzzle pieces, all I have to do is dump it all in these bins and stack them in a corner. Hello floorspace!
  3. Use drawers with wheels that can roll under couch or beds: As a parent you will realise that all the storage in the world is not enough. There are blocks, stuffed toys, puzzle pieces, playdough, kinetic sand and all things and sundry that your child owns. So instead of scratching your head, get the sleek, wheeled drawers that roll under any kind of crawl space.
  4. Invest in wall storage: Driving things up the wall is the new mantra of storage space. Wall storages are perfect for toys that you need to operate for your child.
  5. Use pouches to store tit bits and small toys: Toys have a way of confusing you. Imagine looking at a bazzillion pieces of tiny toys and wondering which ones go together. Use plastic pouches to store the little pieces together, which you can then dump in the bigger bins.

You should avoid unnecessary stress where you can, and organising toys is one such area. So be smart and save your home from being encroached by Lego and barbies.
