Many parents struggle with making their kids sleep on time. While there can be a lot of things that can hamper sleep, one reason could also be not establishing a good sleep routine. There are times when a parent gives up, praying that the child tires out and sleeps. That is the biggest mistake you as a parent can do. In this way, you are not just hampering her sleep routine but also affect her process of growth and development. Here is all you need to know about sleep disorders in children.

How late is very late

According to Dr Santanu Sen, consultant pediatrician, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai, Children below three to four years of age should go to bed between 8.30 to 9 pm. Of course, this seems difficult to achieve practically, but that s the ideal time. However, if your child is a little older, like, say five years of age, you probably can give a grace hour, but ensure that she sleeps by 10 p.m. For most working parents, this routine does not seem very feasible to abide by as you might want to spend time with your child, read books and play, but if a parent is to return home by 11 in the night, it is better for the baby to sleep rather than wait. Here are 10 sleep safe rules every mother should abide by.

A child during the growing phase needs a minimum of 10 hours and a maximum of 12 hours of sleep at night. It is during this crucial period that the secretion of the human growth hormone, or HGH, is at its peak. And this hormone is one that is important for the child s growth and development, says Dr Sen. Here are 10 ways to help your child go to sleep peacefully.

Why the growth hormone is so important

While the growth hormone is secreted throughout the day, it peaks at night, and reduced secretion of the hormone could lead to some growth problems like:

  • Short stature
  • Low growth velocity and late puberty
  • Increased amount of fat around the waist
  • Child looking younger than his/her age
  • Delayed tooth development

What you should do

Here are a few tips Dr Sen offers to help your child sleep well through the night:

  • Always stick to a good sleep care routine. Even if you deviate from it once or twice, try to get back on track as soon as possible.
  • Always maintain a routine like warm bath, massage, keeping the room dark to help your child sleep through the night.
  • Avoid distractions in your bedrooms like TV, loud music or other modes of entertainment that can disturb your child s sleep.
  • If your child wakes in the middle of the night try to put her to sleep again rather than playing or making her more alert.
