Colic pain in infants is intolerable both for the baby and parents. It is believed that this unbearable pain that makes them cry incessantly is due to the air they swallow during their feeds. While this is one theory that experts believe in, some also believe that a mother s diet can affect the child immature digestive system and lead to the abdominal pains. Although this fact isn t medically proven, however, if your child develops colic with 48 hours after you eat any particular food, it is better to restrict its intake for the initial two to three months, says Dr Geetanjali Shah, pediatrician attached to Supraja Foundation and Ashvini IVF Center, Mumbai and author of the book Garbhasanskar. Here are five kitchen ingredients that can help your child get relief from colic naturally.

Some food items that could lead to indigestion, bloating and acidity in lactating mothers and affect the newborn are:

  • Items made from besan (chana atta)
  • Groundnuts (sengdana)
  • Sprouted foods
  • Eggs and other non-vegetarian foods

While these are most common foods that lead to indigestion, there can be others that can affect your system and lead to colic in your baby. It is better to maintain a food dairy while you are breastfeeding to understand which foods affect your baby. Here are 10 things you should not do while breastfeeding.

How to make it

Take one pinch of each

  • Ajwain (carom seeds)
  • Shepa (Dill seeds)
  • Hing (asafoetida)
  • Kalanamak (black salt)
  • Jyeshthamadh (liquorice)
  • Sunth (dried ginger powder)

Add them to a bowl of water and bring it to boil for about five minutes and drink this concoction half an hour after every meal to improve digestion.
