24th January is celebrated as National Girl Child Day.
Raising kids, regardless of the gender, is one challenging, yet rewarding, task. A lot of us fall prey to stereotypes about how to raise a girl child and how to raise a boy child. The boy is raised to be tough and the girl, on the other hand, is expected to be mellowed-down and share household responsibilities. While you may beg to differ, most of the population of our country raise their children differently, depending on their gender. Here is a list of mistakes that you, as new age parents, must avoid making. Here are 5 cartoon shows that you shouldn't let your kids watch.
1. Buying gender specific toys
It is okay for girls to play with a G.I.Joe or toy guns. Even in stores, if you ask for toys for your 5-year-old daughter, they immediately take out jewellery sets, Barbies or Kitchen sets. This is discrimination that you fail to notice. Let your child choose what he/she wants to play with.
2. Teach both your kids how to cook
Cooking is something that is an important survival skill. You need to teach your son AND your daughter, both how to cook. Cooking is not a girl thing, and you would agree with this if you love Chef Sanjeev Kapoor or Chef Vikas Khanna's recipes. Here are 5 habits every stay-at-home mom should quit now.
3. Don't treat the boy child differently in front of the girl child
Like Priyanka Chopra says in the Hero Honda scooty ad, why should boys have all the fun? Seriously, why? Don't create differences amongst the siblings. Sometimes, siblings imitate each other. If your boy is playing rough games and your daughter follows him, ask both of them to stop it. Don't say 'He is a boy. He will play rough games. But you're a girl, so you don't'.'Equality needs to exist between genders right from childhood', says clinical psychologist Namrata Dagia. Check out these 9 healthy habits that you must pass on to your kids.
4. Do not let her clothes dictate where and what she should play
Some parents don't let their daughters climb the bars in a park because the clothes are not appropriate. Well, then you either buy her clothes that will make it comfortable for her to climb the bars or just cherish the fact that your child is having fun. Remember, there is no such thing as 'games for girls' or 'games for boys'. 'You need to ask her to cherish being a woman. You can do all that no one can do', advices Dr Dagia.
5. Don't panic if your daughter starts talking late
It is a common belief that girls start talking sooner than boys. However, in some cases, girls start talking late. Don't panic or jump to any conclusions. Here's how yoga will help you become a better parent.
