5 things only mothers whose children read will understand

If your child is in love with books too, you'll surely relate to these points.

My daughter is a child of books. I wasn’t prepared for the parenting stick, but one thing I was clear about was that I would introduce my child to the love of books. In my opinion, the gift of reading is the best gift you can pass on to the next generation, for the one who loves books, will always have friends. So with this in mind, I bought her the first touch-and-feel book when she was 4 months old, and there has been no looking back. Now tons of books and 2 years later, I can see the difference between my child, and other children who read, and those who don’t. My daughter’s stories are rich with language and imagination. She can pronounce tough names of dinosaurs that can give tongue twisters a run for money. But more than that, there are things that I, as a mother of a child who loves books, understand and go through. If your child is in love with books too, you’ll surely relate to these points: Also Read - 3 books single parents should read with their children

  1. Selecting which books to pack is a major decision: Whenever we are going for a vacation, however short it is, we have to pack books to take along. Now the problem is which books to pack. The favourite ones, or the ones that are about travel or the place we are going to, or should I buy a set of new books just for the trip?
  2. The shopping cart runs into thousands of rupees: The last time I checked, my shopping cart on Amazon was worth Rs 53,000, all filled with books. Not my fault, there are so many books and not enough money. There are board books, story books, chapter books, encyclopedias, books on science, space and everything, books about inspiring people, classics, and of course Dr Seuss, Julia Donaldson and the likes. Phew!
  3. Constantly running out of shelf space: I have a decent sized bookshelf. We started with half-and half between my daughter and me. Then I had to pack away some of my books to make space for my daughter’s increasing library. Now the shelf is full of her books, and there are books all over the place. I think, and entire wall of bookshelf will add a good touch to my house’s interior.
  4. My child reads even in middle of a celebration: I have a picture of my daughter, 17 months old, in a wedding, reading a Sesame street book in middle of all the hullabaloo. It is one of my favourite pictures. Children who love books often use it as a way to escape the chaos and noise. I am not complaining.
  5. I have fallen in love with children books: Children books make so much sense and are full of wisdom! I find myself reading and marvelling at some of the children’s book, and I feel that there are some children’s book that all adults should read too. The likes of Dr Seuss, Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl are classics for a reason!
