You know, all those travel plans you made whilst you were pregnant, of places you want to visit with your child, how your child will be a high-flier and you will style yourself and your child to look sauve when you take a flight. All your senses will come back in place the moment you step out of the house with your baby. Maybe handling a newborn is easier, but one trip to the mall with a toddler and you will know that handling your Mowgli-like child in public places, especially crowded ones, is a tough task. And you might doubt your parenting skills when it comes to reining in the tornado that your child leashes in any place that has more than 2 people. So how, just how, will you handle a child if you need to travel alone with her? Worry not. I have done that and survived! I recently flew with my 2-year-old, and these are the tips that helped me.

  • Get your child their own travel bag: Nothing gets a child more excited than having things that are their and their's only. Get her a travel bag, that can qualify as cabin luggage and let them lug it around. You can also get one of those bags that the child can sit and zoom across. Fun! She'll be enjoying herself, which means lesser chances of tantrum.
  • Carry a small bag with all the documents needed: Carry a small bag, preferably a cross body one, carrying your passport, tickets or any document that you will need. Fishing for things in the diaper bag, or even the humongous purse of yours is too clumsy.
  • Babywearing is a lifesaver: I cannot recommend a babywearing enough. It is a lifesaver! Your baby right with you and both your hands-free -- win win!
  • Carry snacks and toys: This goes without saying of course! Carry enough snacks to feed an army, and toys that your child loves. Don't fret about the number of things you will need to carry. I had a toddler, a carry bag, my purse, my daughter's bag and her stuffed monkey!
  • Keep the child busy: No-screen rule does not apply in an emergency situation. You can either have your toddler standing on her seat and chatting up a storm with all the passengers and cabin crew (true story) or keep her busy with a tablet or one of those wipe-clean magic slates.

Hope these tips help. If you have any other helpful tips, do share!
