Come exam time and sleeping will get difficult, for you and your child. We all know that adequate sleep is important, more so when you have the stress of exams. But it's easier said than done, all the revisions, following a time table and trying to cram up everything the previous night takes a toll on the sleep cycle. So how do you, as a responsible parent, ensure that your child sleeps well and is refreshed before taking the exam the next day? We asked this question to a few real moms and here are tips that they use.

  • Focus on their diet: Not just sleep, even the diet takes a toll during exam time. Kids will start snacking more or eating less, which can make them erratic and irritated, which in turn will affect their sleep. Take care of their diet and feed them food that improves concentration and also aids peaceful sleep. I try to give lots of fruits like oranges and kiwi to keep the children energised, and then follow it with a nutritious dinner which can help them sleep peacefully -- says Hina Jain, mother to 2 children.
  • Don't pressurise them: Most of the children's stress comes from the fact that their parents pressurise them into performing better. In my opinion, a child performs the best when he is relaxed and stress-free. The parents need to take a step back and simply help the child when he needs assistance. Hounding your child will definitely make him restless, and he won't be able to sleep -- says Kanupriya Bagga, mother of a 12-year-old.
  • Use essential oils: I swear by essential oils when it comes to calming stressed nerves. I diffuse different essential oils when my children sleep so that they can relax and wake up refreshed. A well-rested mind will definitely function better than a stressed mind -- says Niral Ghosh, mother to 2 children.
  • Follow a healthy sleep routine: WEe follow a standard sleep routine in our family. Exams is to test what you have learnt over a period of time, and not the night before. So why treat it differently? We have a time table for studying and revisions, but it does not run into bed time -- says Smitha Ganesh, mother of a 15-year-old.
