4 questions never to ask on mommy groups on Facebook or WhatsApp

A healthy dose of common sense will help you maintain your grace on social media mommy groups.

Never in my life would have I known that mommy groups on social media were such a huge deal. I was added on one of the groups by a friend after I became a mother and there was no looking back after that. I joined one group after another and constantly worried if I was missing out on something. Let me break it down for you. There are mommy groups that cater to specific subjects like early learning, phonics, nutrition and weaning, support for breastfeeding, etc. Now these groups are no-nonsense and very straightforward groups. Now there is the other variety -- the all-inclusive mommy groups where you can post all your baby related and non baby related queries. Now this is where the problem starts. Most women take the term 'post anything' way too literally and post some hilariously stupid and vice versa things. If you are on the verge of joining a mommy group, save yourself some shame and do not post the following things.

  1. Tips for conceiving a specific gender: A LOT of women ask for tips and tricks for conceiving male child. Why? Because in our patriarchal society, a male child is gold. He is the kohinoor, the most treasured one. And women are often ill-treated if they birth a girl child. Little do people understand how genetics works. All they want is 'tips' or dadimaa ke nuskhe for conceivnig a male child. Facepalm!
  2. How to have a fair baby: From uptan, besan face packs to rubbing haldi -- mothers will go to any extent to lighten the skintone of their children. A fair child is very important. After you have posted a similar query, do not feel offended if I call you fancy, colourful names.
  3. MIL grief: Indian mothers-in-law have been torturing their daughters-in-law since ages. If you or your husband hasn't grown a spine to stand against that, there's little that a bunch of online women can help you with.
  4. Bedroom stories: Aren't you the luckiest that you landed with the most romantic of all the guys. But do you really think I am interested in reading how your husband got you a rose, popped a bottle of champagne and you guys made out on the kitchen floor? I am worried about the colour of my baby's poop, can you help me with that?
