Every parent wants their child to grasp things fast and be a quick learner. This is not to say that every child's learning speed is, or should be, the same. Everyone is unique, with special skills and grasping abilities. But, there are some fundamental tips that parents can follow to ensure that their little one is able to learn new things in a better and faster manner. According to Dr Puja Kapoor, pediatric neurologist and co-founder of Continua Kids, children are like sponges. They absorb whatever is there in their environment, regardless of whether it is good or bad. "The judgment of what is good or not-good comes at a later age when the ability to judge consequences comes in," she said.
The pediatric neurologist added that there are certain guidelines that can help parents make the child learn 'good' things in a better and faster manner. Read on.
After children wake up in the morning, they feel fresh, are more accepting and open. This is the best time to make them learn new things and introduce new concepts. "Sleeping time may also be ideal [to teach them new things], as the child is at rest, ready to sleep, physically exhausted, but mentally alert. Both these times can be used to feed ideas and imagination to the child."
Dr Kapoor suggested that one must always make things interesting for the child with the help of visual support, which can have long-lasting and strong impact on their mind. "Similar is the case with screen time, where both visual and auditory inputs are given to make it more impactful. But since it is a one-way communication, the child loses their ability to talk, making them a passive learner with no ability to reason and ponder."
Always make the child imbibe the concept and help them to implement it in routine practice. This is the only difference between screen learning and human learning -- it induces the child and activates their brain for communication, thereby stimulating them.
The expert said that since learning is a continuous process, it is important to take it slow. "Enforcing excessive loading on one day, followed by not connecting for days after that is not ideal. Make sure that you give children 60 fruitful minutes every day, wherein you totally concentrate on them to help them with impactful learning."
