Dental cavities in kids are very common now. And when your child's milk teeth have already been affected by cavities it becomes extremely important to take measures to prevent the permanent teeth being affected too. Here is one query about preventing decay in permanent teeth when the milk teeth have fallen prey to it.

Q: My baby girl aged 5yrs had cavities. After some time the decay increased and her teeth broke into small pieces. What should be done to prevent her permanent teeth getting affected?

Answer: Decay in primary (milk) teeth may damage the permanent teeth that are being formed inside the gums. The permanent teeth may be malformed and stained due to infections left untreated in primary teeth. But the greatest risk in permanent teeth in someone who had decay in their primary teeth is not changing the behaviours that caused decay in their primary teeth. It is of utmost important that the behaviours, dietary and oral hygiene of your child are improved by brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing at least once a day and reducing the frequency of the sugars she consumes. Visit a Pedodontist every six months. To reduce the risk of decay through the cavity-prone years, get dental sealants placed on the biting surface of the permanent molars and premolars as soon as they erupt in the mouth.
