Does your child keep bouncing from one activity to another and leaves you drained out? Coping with hyperactive kids isn t easy and there cannot be one tip or method that applies to all. But you can definitely channelise the energy in a better way or in an engaging activity to keep them busy a little longer. It is very important to understand the cause of this hyperactivity and not label the child as not normal, says Dr. Kaustubhi Shukla, clinical psychologist, PSRI Hospital.

Causes of hyperactivity

Not all hyperactive children suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Hence, it is important that the root cause of hyperactivity is diagnosed first and children receive therapy and treatment based on results. Some other causes of hyperactivity are:

Did you know that sleep disorders can lead to hyperactivity too?

How to identify if the child needs medical attention for hyperactivity?

There is a difference between naturally active and hyperactive kids. A naturally active kid may be hyperactive at times but not every day. Also, a naturally active kid responds properly to directions and can control him/herself when asked to. A hyperactive kid on the other hand, is unable to concentrate or understand instructions or directions. They are more impulsive and show aggression upon being controlled. You need to consult a professional if you observe that your child is:

  • Aggressive, impulsive, extremely active all the time
  • Having difficulty in concentrating on any one activity or in class
  • If the persistent hyperactivity is interfering with their school work and is causing social difficulties.
  • Do not listen or follow instructions and is easily distracted
  • Talks non-stop and interrupts others

Diagnosis

  • Physical examinations are the first step along with a series of blood tests to check hormonal and dietary imbalances.
  • There is no single test that can evaluate the condition. Different tests have to be performed to find the exact cause of hyperactivity.
  • A psychological evaluation will follow after the professional studies the symptoms and medical history of your child.

Try to be as clear and honest in your responses as possible when the medical professional questions you about the environment at home and school and the way your child reacts to different situations.

Dr Kaustubhi Shukla shares a few points that parents and teachers must remember when dealing with hyperactive kids.

Tips to deal with hyperactive children

Acceptance is the key. Understand that your child is different from other kids but he/she is not abnormal. Accepting that hyperactivity is more of a psychological issue will help you go a long way in working for your child s betterment. If you keep mentioning that your child is abnormal or not normal repeatedly in front of them, it will give them an excuse to be out of control. For instance, kids will hold hyperactivity responsible for every mistake they make or anyone they hurt while playing.

Respect the child s wish. Allow them to do what they like rather than forcing things upon them. If they like sketching or riding a bike, allow them to do that instead of asking them to study or enrolling them for dance classes just because other kids are doing it.

Focus on the strengths of your child and channelize their mind towards it. If you child loves art and is drawing everywhere around the house, send them to an art or craft class. If as a teacher, you observe a child who likes to take charge, appoint them as a class monitor and observe the difference.

Be attentive to both the physical and mental needs of the child. Spend time not just to hear what they are saying but actually listen to them. Spending just 15-20 minutes every day to listen and understand their thoughts help a long way in dealing with a hyperactive child says Dr. Kaustubhi Shukla.

Stop comparing. Making comparisons between siblings or with other children can be very harmful to the mental health of children whether they are hyperactive or not. Every child has some strengths and assets and it is the responsibility of parents and teachers to identify and work on them.

Dealing with a hyperactive child needs not just patience but lot of hard work and a sense of dedication. It is your responsibility to provide the child with the right environment which is conducive to the positive development of children.

Other practical tips you can use without forcing it on your child are:

  • Teach them deep breathing when they feel anger or too much aggressiveness. This will ensure your child does not hit or hurt any other children.
  • Engage the child in household chores. Give them responsibility. Children enjoy activities where they are in-charge.
  • Take them outdoors. Homework, tuitions, co-curricular activities steal play time from children which can also be the cause of anxiety or aggression. Allow them to play and help them balance between school and work.

Being calm is the key to deal with a hyperactive child. If you succeed in building a healthy relationship with them and communicate enough, you will bond better. Remember, this is not a disorder and do not let your child feel they are different or not normal.
