I know a lot of parents are against buying too many toys for their kids for the sole reason that children seldom play with all the toys that they have, and you feel like you wasted a lot of money on toys that are only stashed away in the bin. Toys are expensive! And I am also of the opinion that a child does not need too many toys. But yes, I also believe that with the right toys, a child can practice and perfect their motor skills and also that many toys are beneficial for developing children's cognitive skills. What a child needs is not too many toys, but the right toys. Starting from 0-6 months, and even later at 6-12 months, make sure that you invest in the right kind of toys that your child will not only enjoy but will also learn and grow with. Don't overstuff your child's playroom with dolls, stuffed toys, cars and whatnot, instead buy limited, but helpful toys. Musical toys: Your child may or may not be a musical genius, but she at the stage where she identifies rhythm and wants to imitate sounds. So getting her musical toys like drums, or a tambourine is a good idea for now. Let her jiggle and jaggle and be amused at the sounds that it makes. You can also get her a kiddie Casio.
Bead maze: This is one toy that ALL children love. I don't know what it is, the colourful beads or the challenge of moving the beads through a maze of twisted sticks. Hand puppets: I absolutely love hand puppets. They are great playing resources that can be used for imaginative play as well as story telling. Get the little puppets or the finger puppets that are easily available. Your child will be hooked on to the moving, speaking animals and will also want to put her hands in one and start moving it. Great motor skill exercise there.
Kitchen set: Regardless of the gender of your child, every child MUST have a kitchen set, and 12-18 months is the right time. It helps in imaginary play in a big way, and your child will be offering you tea countless times during the day.
