Finger food for toddlers: Steamed veggie kebabs

Steamed veggie kebabs make for an excellent snack to carry when going out!

There's no greater joy for a mum than to see her baby eat the food she has cooked. When I started on the weaning journey, I had two things in my mind -- I would make my child taste as many foods as possible and we would practice self-feeding. Now the thing with baby-led weaning is that I could not give my baby pureed or mashed food according to many experts.

Effath Yasmin, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Biodynamic CranioSacral Therapist, Founder/Director - Nourish & Nurture Lactation Care & Parenting Education, says that we should avoid giving pureed and mashed food to toddlers. She advises you to give finger foods as that helps in developing the chewing skill and also stimulates their taste buds as they can actually taste the various flavours and textures.

I started trying out various finger foods that my baby would approve of and struck gold with steamed veggie kebabs! With the goodness of various vegetables, this kebab offers nutrition from different food groups. Even you can enjoy it as an appetiser or side-dish. Here's the recipe:

Ingredients

  • Chopped vegetables - Carrot, potato, beans, capsicum and cauliflower : 1 cup
  • Boiled and mashed potato : 1/2 cup
  • Goat cheese : 1 tbsp (optional)
  • Bread crumbs: 1 cup
  • Oil : For brushing

Method

  • Steam the vegetables till they turn soft, but are still chewy.
  • Mix in mashed potato and cheese.
  • Mix well and shape into finger sized kebabs.
  • Roll in bread rolls to coat the kebabs completely.
  • Brush oil and fry it in an air-fryer. You can also shallow fry it in a pan.
  • Place the cooked kebabs on a paper tissue.
  • Once cooled, offer it to your baby.

Note: You can add salt if your child is at least a year old. If your baby is too young, you can break it into bite-sized pieces for her.

This recipe is suitable for babies over 8 months old .
