Massaging is a traditional practice still prevalent in India. Usually, parents mull over which oil to use. While some choose the age-old coconut oil, even the new-age mineral oil has gained a lot of popularity during recent times. If you have been wondering which option is better, here's what you should know about the two. Also, read about what experts has to say about massaging your baby.

Coconut oil is better than mineral oil -- why?

Oil massage for infants is known to improve blood circulation and bone density [1], the practice has become popular in neonatal intensive care units. Of the many oils that are used for massaging babies, coconut oil and mineral oil are quite commonly used.

Coconut oil contains lauric acid and other essential fatty acids which have antibacterial, antiviral and antiprotozoal properties. It plays a crucial role in the absorption of fats through the skin, along with helping in the growth and development of preterm infants [2]. It also acts as a barrier that prevents excessive loss of water from the skin and, in turn, helps you to maintain your body temperature.

Mineral oil is derived from petroleum and commonly used as a moisturiser. However, when applied on the skin, it forms a thick coat over the skin [3]. This not only clogs the skin pores and prevents the skin from breathing freely, but also absorbs the natural moisture. In some cases, use of mineral oil was found to cause skin irritation and burning sensation.

According to a study published in the Indian Pediatrics [2], using coconut oil for massaging newborns showed a significant improvement in weight, as compared to mineral oil. Coconut oil aids in better thermoregulation, thereby helping in overall weight gain in infants. Moreover, coconut oil promotes weight gain, even in preterms. Unlike mineral oil, coconut oil is safe to use and available at an affordable price, which makes it the best option.
