At what time do your kids sleep? ©Shutterstock
Lack of good sleep or insufficient sleep has been linked to a number of diseases in adults. But the same holds true even for kids. Did you know that lack of sleep has been linked to depression and anxiety in kids? A research by the University of Houston in the US says that inadequate sleep impacts children s emotional health not only by creating more negative emotion but also by altering positive emotional experiences. It has also been found that inadequate sleep can cause obesity in kids because children who sleep less tend to eat more which increases the risk of obesity and related health problems later in life. Celeb nutritionist and author of the newly launched book Notes for Healthy Kids, Rujuta Diwekar, recently shared her inputs on how poor sleep affects kids' health. Do you find that your kid is getting sick often or is moody or cranky quite a bit? Well, all she needs to do is develop a good sleep hygiene. Essentially good sleep hygiene refers to habits that lead to good sleep. And the most important of those habits is to have a fixed time to go to sleep and wake up on most days of the week if not all.
What s the right time to go to bed?
- Between 8 pm -9.30 pm is ideal as this allows for optimum sleep
- Teenagers may extend it to 10.30pm but not later
- Practice waking up at the same time every morning
- If your child sleeps much longer than usual on weekends, know that she is sleep deprived
- Remember that you can t make up for one night s sleep by sleeping too much the next day.
- Overall that sleepover is not really a cool idea. Restrict it to once or twice a year.
Why is sleep important?
- It helps protect from all non-communicable diseases obesity, diabetes, fatty liver, etc.
- Improves academic performance and creativity
- Reduces stress and anxiety in teenagers
- Supports growth and strengthens the immune response
- Improves memory and deletes all that is unnecessary
- Improves EQ and all mental health issues like ADHD
