India's rich herbal tradition offers natural solutions for baby skin care and internal cooling, with various edible herbs providing unique benefits. These wonder herbs come as a blessing in summer. They can help our kids navigate the tough summer days with a bit of thought and effort. In the scorching heat of summer, babies and children are particularly vulnerable to skin and health issues compared to adult rashes and sunburns. Thankfully, India is blessed with a rich array of edible herbs that can help keep your child's body and skin cool and protected during the hottest days of the year.

Certified Newborn Care Specialist Priyadarshini Krishnan, the Founder of ROOT and SOIL, explores some of the readily available yet amazingly beneficial herbs and their benefits:

    1. Neem (Azadirachta indica): Neem is a powerhouse herb with antibacterial and antifungal properties commonly available in India. Adding neem leaves to bathing water and placing the water in the sun for about 30 minutes shields babies from bacterial and fungal infections. Grinding tender neem leaves and offering a pea-sized ball to the kids on an empty stomach for three consecutive days prevents them from developing worms and stomach issues in summer while building immunity.

    3. Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis miller): Aloe vera is a versatile summer super herb. It has excellent healing and cooling properties, preventing the skin from sunburns, and forms a protective barrier against tanning, keeping kids' skin hydrated and resilient. Offering fresh aloe vera juice is a simple but effective way to add aloe vera to the kid's diet, as it cools down the body in summer or blends aloe vera gel with fruit juices or smoothies to add a cooling boost to your baby's diet.
    4. Mint: Common in Indian kitchens, these are unsung superheroes. Mint leaves, rich in phytonutrients and vitamin C, provide a refreshing flavour, while coriander is rich in antioxidants. Mint's menthol component creates a cooling sensation on the skin and internally, helping lower body temperature and relieve summer heat. Mint juice can be a go-to way to add mint to the kid's diet, and since it's so refreshing, it's mostly the kid's favourite, too.
    5. Coriander (Coriandrum sativum): Similarly, coriander's cooling properties help regulate body temperature and promote internal cooling; garnishing the curries and sabzi with coriander leaves is all we must do to include them easily in the kids quickly. Both mint and coriander can be offered as chutneys twice a week in kids' sandwiches or along with dosas.
