Remember how excited we used to be to finish all our homework and watch television for a while? Most of us grew up on cartoons like Tom & Jerry, Looney Tunes, Disney's Mickey Mouse, Dora The Explorer and so on. Our parents didn't even mind letting us watch those shows. But young parents these days are very hesitant to let their kids watch certain cartoon shows. Why? Because they know it is ruining their kid's language skills. We spoke to some parents and came up with a list of cartoon shows that, according to them, are messing with their little one's language skills and behaviour. Here are 7 ways to handle your child's temper tantrums.
Shin Chan
Shin Chan is a cartoon despised by parents universally. We don't blame them. You don't want your kids to talk like that spoilt 5-year-old Shin Chan. It is every parents' pet peeve. To your relief, this show has been banned in India and in many other countries, too. This is why your child takes your 'No' for a 'Yes'.
Oggy and the cockroaches
It's bad enough that you hate cockroaches in real life, but to see them in cartoons is just unacceptable. A bunch of evil cockroaches bothering cats is definitely not something you want your kids to watch. 'The content is too violent and adult. I would rather make my daughter watch older cartoons like Ducktales, Jungle book or Talespin where she would, at least, get some clean entertainment', says Nazneen Haider, mother of a two-year-old.
Motu Patlu
The title itself promotes body image issues. 'My eight-year-old son thinks that if he eats samosa/vada pav like Motu, he will turn fat. Plus, the language is inadequate', says Sujata Aiyangar, a deputy general manager at a reputed IT MNC. We agree with you completely! Here are 9 healthy habits that you must pass on to your kids.
Doraemon
This entire show revolves around Nobita, a lazy and mischievous boy, always getting into trouble and Doraemon, a robotic cat who was sent back in time by Nobita's great grandson to stop him from going down the destructive path, standing by him and helping him get out of trouble. He uses his magic gadgets to rescue Nobita, who always misuses the gadgets. Not only is it irritating to watch Nobita whine all the time but it also gives your kids a wrong impression that it's okay to be lazy and mischievous and encourages them to take the easy way out instead of working hard. 'We, as parents, want to inculcate good values in our kids. But when kids see Nobita, it propagates a 'I can do whatever I want to' attitude', complaints Revathi Srinivasan, mother of a four-year-old. Here are 10 good things parents do with their kids.
Chota Bheem
Chota Bheem is everywhere. On television, school bags, lunch boxes, toy stores and the list goes on. Kids love this show so much that they don't even mind watching the repeat telecast over and over again. In the show, Chota Bheem eats laddoo and gains the power to fight evil. Well, eating laddoos can also give you diabetes when you grow up or worse, childhood obesity.
