Stability and durability: One thing you have to make sure is that crib is stable and strong. You can't take chances with that! When looking at cribs, giving it a good shake and check for the quality of the wood used.
The spaces between the rails: A lot of times, small babies get their foot or hands caught between the rails of the crib. Look for one that does not have wide spaces between the rails. Also, inspect the edges and corners well to check that they are not sharp, which might hurt the baby.
Mattress: Any space between the mattress and the walls of the crib is accident prone, and you don't want a little toe or finger caught between the yawning space. Make sure that the mattress that you use fit the crib perfectly well, without leaving any space in-between.
Cribs with drop-sides: If you settle for a crib with drop-sides, be double sure about the sides being sturdy and properly attached. There have been accidents involving the drop sides coming loose and hurting the babies. Be especially careful once your child is old-enough to climb down the crib.
Movable cribs: Given the fact that homes are short on space, a lot of cribs are movable, that is they come with wheels so that you can move it with ease. However, it also means that it is accident prone as your child can make it move if the wheels aren't locked properly. When buying a crib like that, make sure to check and re-check the locks.
