During winters, infants need extra care and attention to prevent seasonal illness like cough and cold. However, the cold and dry weather also increases the risk of many skin problems in babies. Right from diaper rash to fungal infections, kids are prone to winter skin problems. Ranjan Pejawar, Bangalore based paediatrician, outlines the common skin problems that babies face during winter. Also, read why infants are at a high risk of infection in winter. Also Read - Castor oil for dark circles: Here's how to use it

1. Diaper rash: Wearing a diaper of the wrong size and friction generally causes diaper rashes. So if your baby is dressed in several layers, then it goes without saying that your baby is vulnerable to moisture and irritation. The only way to prevent it is to keep checking and changing the diaper frequently and choose a proper-fitting diaper to prevent excessive sweating and friction. You can also use diaper cream to soothe the irritation. Also Read - DIY oatmeal face masks to treat acne, blackheads and other skin problems

2. Rough, red cheeks: Chapped skin is basically dry skin that becomes inflamed due to irritation caused by friction from clothing and runny nose. To deal with it, you can use a thick moisturiser or petroleum jelly on your baby’s cheeks which act as a natural barrier and help treat chapped skin.

3. Chapped lips: The moisture from the drooling lips and nose of babies can break down the protective top layer of the skin. This can leave the lips vulnerable to the dry and cold air. To prevent this, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or lip balm as it not only moisturizes the lips but also acts as a barrier for dry air. Here are ways to keep your baby warm this winter.

4. Eczema: Babies with eczema have insufficient skin surface for holding moisture. Like regular dry skin, dermatitis tends to erupt during winter causing irritation. To deal with it, expose your baby to water twice a day as it helps the skin to stay hydrated. Also, spread a moisturizing cream on the skin to lock in the moisture. If the condition fails to subside, consult your paediatrician.

5. Fungal infections: The damp and warm spots such as skin folds, act as a favourable growth surface for yeast and fungus. A fungal or yeast infection manifests as red bumps or blisters, especially in the diaper area. If the irritation and skin rash doesn’t get better with regular diaper rash treatment, seek medical advice.

If you are planning a winter outing with your infant keep these 7 things in mind.
