It is an amazing feeling to see your child walk and take her first wobbly steps. Yes, now it is time for shoe shopping. But be careful while selecting her first pair of shoes. Remember, the wrong type of shoe can ruin her feet and affect her developmental milestones. So here are a few things that you need to keep in mind when you buy your child s first pair of shoes:

  1. As a thumb rule never go for fancy shoes. Remember, going by designs and fancy shapes can compromise your baby s comfort and growth.
  2. Pick shoes that are breathable, lightweight and made of either cloth or soft leather. Here are 19 other baby care tips.
  3. Avoid stiff leather shoes which can restrict the growth of foot and lead to problems like ingrown toes, hammer toes, calluses. Yes, these problems can happen with babies too.
  4. Always remember the outer or upper part of your baby s shoe should be made of either canvas or soft leather. The fancy plastic ones are not breathable and could make your baby feel irritable.
  5. Check the insole. It should be well padded and of an absorbent material as kids tend to sweat a lot through their feet.
  6. The outer sole should be flexible enough, not smooth and stiff as it could lead to slip and fall. Instead, a flexible rubber sole with ridges provides better traction and grip for your baby s little feet.
  7. When you choose the right shoe, ensure that you give some thought over the fitting as well. Never buy shoes one size bigger for your child because their feet grow really fast. Instead, buy shoes with just the right amount of wriggle room. Once you select the shoes, make your child stand to wear the shoe and press the toe area to ensure there is enough space between the toes and the shoe.
  8. Look for shoes that have enough ankle support. This is why lace shoes (the canvas types) are always better that the ones with Velcro straps. As it gives your child enough ankle support and reduces the risk of falling.
  9. If you choose canvas shoes, always remember to put a double knot and lace it properly to avoid chances of a fall or accident by tripping.
  10. Remember, your baby s feet grow pretty fast so keep checking the fit and change them every two months if needed.
