Teething can be a real painful phase. Teething usually starts between four to six months of age when the first set of pearly whites erupt on the bottom gum line. However, at times, it can occur as late as 12 months also. While teething your baby may be irritable and fussy, cry without rhyme or reason and drool often. This is also the time when your child might want to bite or chew on a hard or soft surface to soothe her gums. Yes, it s perfect time to get teethers for her now. But when you choose a teether, be careful, rather than opting for the plastic ones or the new-age water or gel based teether, go natural. Here is what you need to do when your child suffers from teething pain.

Instead, choose a wooden teether which is hard and devoid of chemicals. There are plastic teethers in the market which might be made of low-grade plastic and have paints on them that can come out once your child starts chewing on them (unless you choose a BPA free one). In that case, these chemicals can lead to a stomach infection or diarrhoea. Here are few reasons why choosing a wooden teether over a plastic one is a good decision:

  • Unlike plastics, they are natural and without any chemical paints.
  • They are hard enough for your baby to chew on them to soothe the painful gums. Here are nine reasons other than teething that can make your child cry.
  • There are fewer chances of a piece of the wooden teether breaking and leading to a choking accident, which can happen with a plastic teether.

However, if you don t want to use a wooden teether and still want a natural alternative you can try frozen carrot sticks. Wash, scrape and cut carrots into sticks and freeze them. When your baby cries due to pain or even otherwise you can offer these sticks to chew on. However, do keep a watch so that she doesn t swallow a chunk of it accidentally.
