Baby care tip #11

If you are using feeding bottles for your baby whether to fill it with formula or breast milk remember sterilising the bottles the right way is of prime importance. This will ensure that each time you offer your baby a feed the bottles are free of any bacteria or grime that were left behind after the last feeding session. Do this at least twice daily.

To do it right: Make a soapy solution and clean each part of your baby's bottle - the teats, the top and the body thoroughly and wash them with clean water. Next take a bigger pan filled with water and bring it to boil. Put all the parts of the bottle into the boiling water and keep it for around 10 minutes. Make sure that you fill the pan with enough water so that all the parts of the bottle remains submerged. Ideally you should choose BPA-free bottles for your baby. BPA or Bisphenol A is a chemical used in plastic bottles and containers which can cause much harm if it enters into the systems of your little one. In case you aren't using bottles that are BPA-free then do not put the bottles directly into the boiling water. Instead boil the water and take it off the burner, then keep the different parts of the bottle submerged in it for at least 15 minutes. Bottles that contain BPA can leak a small amount of it when boiled in water. The remnants can stay inside and mix with your baby's milk even after proper sterilisation. In case of the teats wash it thoroughly before every feed. Also read useful tips to help you care better for your newborn.
