Atopic dermatitis and paediatric skincare: It is a known fact that newborn babies have delicate skin that needs nurturing. In fact, their thin skin can make them more susceptible to rapid loss of moisture. As a result, atopic dermatitis (AD) can present itself as a persistent inflammatory skin disorder. It is said to be one the most common forms of sensitive skin conditions that affects millions of babies. In fact, the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) has established standardised guidelines for paediatric skincare, which include recommendations for managing sensitive skin conditions, such as eczema. The guidelines focus on the importance of preserving the natural barrier of the skin using products that are gentle on the baby.
Dr Vinay H Joshi, a neonatologist and pediatric intensivist at Cloudnine Hospital, Mumbai, and honorary consultant at Wadia Hospital says AD can impact a baby's skin, causing persistent itching, rashes and flare-ups that cause discomfort, irritability, and disturbed sleep. The constant scratching can result in skin infections, further aggravating the condition.
"The emotional and physical toll on the baby can also affect the parents, leading to stress and anxiety. Moreover, the chronic nature of AD means that babies may experience flare-ups and remissions, requiring ongoing management. This makes it essential to develop a comprehensive skincare routine that can help relieve symptoms and prevent exacerbations," Dr Joshi says.

According to the doctor, the first step lies in early detection of AD, followed by timely intervention with appropriate paediatric skincare practices. The management of atopic dermatitis in babies requires a holistic approach that focuses on protecting the skin barrier, reducing inflammation, and preventing infections, he adds.
