Here are few tips for parents to save children from related problems.
Practice the 20/20/20 approach: When the eye muscles are fatigued due to overuse and less rest, children usually complain about headaches, blurry vision, double-vision, problem in focussing, etc. To counter this, the most common approach one can follow is the 20/20/20 mechanism. This means after 20 minutes of computer work or near reading ask your child to focus at an object placed 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Remember to relax and blink frequently while taking these breaks. Encourage outdoor activities: Recent studies have shown that children spending more time outdoors have a slower progression (not reduction) of myopia or nearsightedness, which is usually common among school going children. Practice good focusing techniques: Always encourage your child to follow good focusing habits, which mean to avoid near reading and activities that could lead to too much eye strain. One good way to do it is to make your child sit at a study table to do his/her homework and reading. Encourage to keep the spine erect while sitting, which will limit near reading habit. In a similar manner, keep your child at a distance from the computer screen while using it. Get ergonomic furniture to enable your child to position the computer screen 20 to 24 inches away from the eyes. The centre of the screen should be about 10 to 15 degrees below the eyes for comfortable positioning of head and neck. Make sure that the brightness, text size and colour contrasts are adjusted to the optimum so that it doesn't strain your little one s eyes.
