Treating gum diseases with lasersThe very thought of surgery sends shivers down the spine. Imagine going to your dentist for your gum surgery and being informed that there shall be no injections, blades and stitches used during the procedure. It may sound straight out of a sci-fi movie, but it isn’t. Laser surgery is a procedure where laser energy is delivered through optical fibres and is used to cut and clean the surgical area. Laser treatment has several benefits. In most instances, it can be carried out without the need for anaesthesia. There is also markedly less bleeding and swelling. Decreased bleeding is due to the ability of the laser to assist in forming a fibrin clot. This eliminates the need for placing sutures (stitches) and wounds heal faster. And there’s more. Lasers kill the harmful bacteria and sterilize the working area thereby reducing the need for antibiotics! Procedure
The laser energy from dental lasers is delivered through an optical fibre. The fibre is continuously moved along the gum wall of the pocket. The diseased gum lining and necrotic debris that accumulate periodically on the fibre tip are removed. Also Read - 6 under eye treatments to reduce dark circles, crow's feet and more

The laser also achieves decontamination by killing the harmful bacteria followed by thorough scaling and root planing is done. (Read: Gum disease doesn’t always need surgery)

Laser energy can completely debride the gum pocket and help stop bleeding. The closure of the pocket and the stabilization of blood clot are aided by compressing the gums against the root surface of the teeth. Since laser selectively targets diseased or infected tissue in the gum pocket, the surrounding healthy tissue is not damaged.

Laser also helps form new healthy gum attachment through regeneration of the bone and gum connective tissue and aids in sealing the gum pockets. Dental lasers can also be used to reshape gum tissue.
