Time to look beyond your good ol’ toothbrush

Time to look beyond your good ol’ toothbrush

When it comes to oral hygiene, one instrument that is absolutely necessary is a toothbrush. There are so many varieties of toothbrushes in the market that you are spoilt for choice. Though the manual toothbrushes are the most commonly used, electric toothbrushes are also gaining popularity. An electric toothbrush uses electric power supplied usually by a battery. Its head moves either side to side (oscillating) or rotates in one direction and then the other (rotation-oscillation). They can have super-fast vibrations of around 30,000 strokes per minute, thus making them more efficient than manual toothbrushes in removing plaque and debris on the teeth. Though these kinds of brushes do help in maintaining oral hygiene, they have certain limitations. They cannot reach the smallest crevices between the teeth. They use toothpaste with abrasive particles which can damage your tooth enamel. They may also allow patients to carelessly brush too hard. They are not recommended for people with sensitive teeth and gums.

In order to fight these limitations, a revolutionary new ultrasonic toothbrush has been launched. They look just like a normal manual toothbrush used with toothpaste but are actually brushes which are embedded with a microchip and use ultrasound waves to clean teeth.

How do they work?

You just need to place the brush on the teeth along with the special Nano-bubble toothpaste which comes with it. It creates up to 96 million sound waves per minute and cleans up to 12mm beneath the surface. Millions of tiny bubbles are created when the brush starts working. These are small enough to get into the tiniest of crevices or gaps between the teeth and into the gums, where they implode, killing bacteria and dislodging tartar and food debris.

Benefits of an ultrasonic toothbrush

Ultrasound cleans where no bristle or even floss can reach - between the teeth, the fissures and the gum pockets. Gum disease begins with build-up of bacteria in plaque and if not treated it may end with destruction of the tissue that surrounds your teeth. Research has shown that ultrasound can destroy bacteria by rupturing their cells and enzymes. Ultrasonic toothbrushes not only clean every corner of your mouth with a lasting effect but also prevent gum disease. They can even reduce gum inflammation by destroying the bacteria causing the infection and also promote blood circulation in the gums. They also claim to help you regain the original white colour of your teeth without bleaching! Ultrasonic toothbrushes are also recommended for patients with implants. In most cases, they have been shown to prevent gum problems around the implants. Cleaning the teeth in the first 4-6 weeks after placing the implants is impossible with regular brushes because of infections and irritation. Also, dirt and bacteria may enter and quickly multiply and create bacterial colonies.in the micro-gap (a small gap between 2 to about 45 remaining between the implant, abutment and crown). Ultrasonic toothbrushes make it possible to clean the teeth even right after setting the implants because bacteria are killed and the brush does not require movement. They also kill and remove bacterial colonies in the micro-gap.

The Nano-bubble toothpaste has no abrasive particles and helps protect the enamel and its protection shield unlike normal abrasive toothpaste.

Are they safe?

Ultrasound waves have a multi-decade safety record and are used in the field of medicine for various purposes. They are absolutely safe and are harmless. Furthermore, the ultrasound used in the toothbrush uses only 0.2 watts. Medical research has shown that ultrasound up to 50 watts is not harmful to the human body. It also poses no harm to anyone with a pacemaker.

The good news is that the ultrasonic brushes have been launched in India. To know more visit http://www.emmi-dent.in/
