Regularly rinsing with a desensitizing mouthwash can relieve teeth sensitivity. A mouthwash for sensitive teeth acts by numbing nerve endings and/or strengthening tooth enamel by coating it with materials that reinforce it. But before you pick up that mouthwash, find out what you need to look for in your mouthwash. Also Read - Detoxify your mouth with these homemade mouthwashes

1. Mouthwashes that contain alcohol can cause a burning sensation only to add to your existing woes. A concentrated mouthwash can lead to mouth ulcers, root sensitivity, etc.

2. Avoid mouthwashes that are acidic. Mouthwashes with lower pH erode the protective enamel layer and worsen the condition.

3. Opt for a non-alcohol mouthwash with fluoride content. They are specifically designed to reduce sensitivity. Most of the desensitizing mouthwashes contain potassium salts, calcium phosphate, fluoride, etc.

4. Desensitizing mouthwash containing arginine can help reduce tooth sensitivity by sealing the tubules in the dentine.

A handy tip

Gargle with around 20 ml of mouthwash for at least 30 seconds and spit it out. Avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after you use it. Rinse your mouth with a mouthwash before you go to sleep to ensure that the mouthwash doesn t get washed off too soon.
