It s never a good idea to have anything onion-y or garlic-ky for breakfast or lunch or any time of the day when you re going to be outside and among people! Of course, staying away from anything that has too much garlic or onion in it is a good idea. But you can t always avoid having that delicious bhel from your colleague or snacking on hot kanda bhajjis or even having a serving of a sumptuous garlic bread during lunch. What s worse is that your bad breath can easily last for about 5-6 hours after you ve had onions, garlic or coffee. And no, no matter what the mint and chewing gum ads proclaim, they are simply unable to beat the smell of raw onion sprinkled on that buttery pav bhaji you had for lunch. So what do you do when you want to mask the odour and make your breath smell fresh? Here are a few tried and tested tricks to get rid of bad breath that work for me.
1) Eat fruits: Apples, oranges, pineapples, pomegranate, pears, plums work the best. Citrus fruits, especially, can cut through the bad breath quickly.
2) Chew on cloves: We re all aware of its strong aromatic fragrance. You just need one clove to do the trick.
3) Have lemon juice: Full of Vitamin C which helps fight bacteria causing bad breath and its refreshing fragrance and taste will also mask onion or garlic smells.
4) Eat 5-6 mint leaves: Do not opt for mint chewing gums or mints. Instead, go for the original. Mint leaves will quickly freshen up your mouth.
5) Saunf or fennel seeds: There s a reason why Indians have saunf after meals. Fennel acts as a mouth freshener. It reduces halitosis by killing the bad-breath producing bacteria.
