Zika Virus In Pune: A 46-year-old doctor and his teenage daughter have tested positive for Zika virus in Pune, health officials reported on Thursday. The doctor, residing in the Erandwane area, showed symptoms such as fever and rashes. He was immediately admitted to a private hospital, and blood samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV). Later, on June 21, reports confirmed that the man was suffering from Zika virus infection.
After his diagnosis, blood samples from his five family members were tested. His 15-year-old daughter also tested positive for the virus. As per media reports, both are currently stable.
First spotted in monkeys in Uganda in 1947, the Zika virus was found in humans by 1952. The main carrier is the Aedes mosquito, notably the Aedes aegypti species. Zika is mainly spread via bites from infected mosquitoes. Yet, it can also be transmitted through sexual contact, blood transfusions, and from a pregnant mother to her baby.
